i’m a big tarheel fan. have been since my days living in VA. when it comes to basketball i’m an ACC guy through and through. and college basketball is finally upon us and i couldn’t be more excited. if i had to choose, it is by far my favorite season of any sport, pro or college. the fans, the hustle, the drama….all far superior to anything any other sport brings to the table, period.

what i also love about it, is that you have ‘rebuilding’, or as some say about UNC ‘reloading’, seasons. i love them! you never know what you’re going to get, you get to meet and cheer on new players, and no matter what your team is ranked, if they make the dance they have a shot.

that sums up where i’m at with this carolina team. they have lots of young studs, but most young studs, play young in their first season. UNC has a few hold overs from last year’s championship team, who will provide good leadership to the young guys. all i can say for sure is that they’re talented, athletic and have lots of long tall bodies. should be an entertaining season.

Sr. High Retreat

this weekend i’ve had the privilege of being a speaker at a sr. high retreat. it’s day 2 and we’re going strong.

last night we challenged the students to have a different view of God. to see that God is untamed, and that the plan that He has for our lives may seem crazy, uncomfortable, and maybe even dangerous.

we did two rapid fire sessions this morning. when i say rapid fire, i mean that 6 of us had only 10 minutes to speak on one topic that we felt most passionately about. it seemed to go over pretty well. i always like switching it up.

tonight i’ll be talking about how as the people of God we are called to be untamed. we are called to stop living safe, comfortable lives and follow God where ever He leads.

more goodness to come for the rest of the day and tomorrow

V:: so it wasn’t just me?

v-logo-001i watched the premiere of ABC’s V last night and found it to be rather entertaining. it has all the elements of a sci-fi show that i enjoy…some mystery, some action, large ranging scope, and some pretty good special effects. the cast as of right now seem to be good choices, and the actress picked to play Anna is so far a perfect choice; slightly creepy, but definitely captivating. i thought the pacing was good, and we were left with some intriguing plot lines. i’ll be on board as long as it stays at this level of quality.

as i was watching it though, i couldn’t help but wonder if there was some sort of message trying to be sent to the audience. the miami herald’s Glenn Garvin had this to say about the potential ‘message’ being sent…

V, an ambitious remake of a 1980s NBC show, in many respects stays close to the original’s story line. What has changed — radically — is the political subtext.
But ABC’s series takes aim not at a German dictator from the misty past but a sitting — and popular — U.S. president. From the fawning reaction of the news media (sample press-conference question to V leader Anna: “Is there such a thing as an ugly visitor?”) to the recruiting of human supporters into an alien front group that could easily be mistaken for “community organizing,” the parallels to Obama are unmistakable.

The anti-V underground, in its frustrated insistence that the aliens have a covert agenda, resemble nothing so much as the anti-Obama tea party protesters [my edit] . And even the president’s repeated attempts to suborn Republicans into making his program bipartisan get a scorching reference.

“Compromising one’s principles for the greater good is not a shameful act,” a V leader reassures an erstwhile opponent who’s just been bought off. “It’s a noble one.”

do i think that V will become a critique and political commentary? i hope not. do i think the writer(s) of this show intend this? i would be hard pressed to see how they couldn’t. i was just glad to know that i wasn’t the only one who saw this underlying theme in the episode.

the good news is, you can watch this show regardless of political affiliation and enjoy it. though i’m sure some will turn it off because of the intended or unintended metaphors.

i’m all about promoting things that i use. not that i’m a pitch guy, but if it’s quality i’m going to share it. which brings me to ultimate-guitar. whether you’re a guitar legend or a beginner, you should have this bookmarked. they have hundreds and probably thousands of songs tabbed and chorded there. also they have an auto scroller on the pages so that you can keep playing without having to stop to scroll down. and then greatest new thing they’ve added…an auto transposer. whether you need to move the song up or down, click scroll and click again, and the chords are adjusted, without messing with the lyrics. this is going to save me tons of time, and just makes guitar life a ton easier. thanks ultimate-guitar!
